Zero G Introduces PowerUpdate, Automated Updating Service for Software Developers

Free Internet Service Helps Software Developers to Manage Software Application Updates Automatically

SAN FRANCISCO, May 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Zero G, the leading provider of multi-platform software deployment solutions, today announced the introduction of PowerUpdate(TM), an Internet-based updating service for software applications and data. The free service alerts customers when there is a product update or newer version of their software available, and then optionally initiates the download and installation of the latest version.

Primarily designed for use by independent and enterprise software producers, PowerUpdate utilizes the Internet to streamline the updating and software redeployment process, setting up a single updating solution that is available at anytime, for virtually any number of customers. The service is an ideal solution for software vendors who need to update millions of customers, and for information technology professionals who manage large workgroups and need a seamless way to update programs or data on a frequent basis.

In addition to software applications, PowerUpdate can revise any other type of data files, including HTML and standard word processing or spreadsheet documents. PowerUpdate virtually eliminates the software support burden that arises when users have out-of-date software. Today, the majority of technical support questions are answered with ``you need an update,'' but with PowerUpdate, these issues become a thing of the past.

``PowerUpdate is an extremely flexible management tool that saves software producers considerable time and expense, while making the routine updating of software by end users so easy that it is almost foolproof,'' said Eric Shapiro, CEO of Zero G. ``By automating the updating process, developers can spend more time focusing on their core business -- developing great software, and not constantly managing the release of product fixes, updates and new versions. With PowerUpdate, developers can rest assured that their customers always have access to the latest version of their software.''

Easy Setup, Seamless Delivery

PowerUpdate has an easy-to-use web-based interface that takes developers through the process of setting up the PowerUpdate service. Once the set-up is complete, developers receive a ``Check For Update'' icon that can be added to their application before general distribution, a product web page, or delivered separately to customers who already have installed their software. The ``Check For Update'' can be invoked directly by the user or automatically by starting PowerUpdate, each time the user runs their application software.

Using the Internet, PowerUpdate contacts Zero G's secure server, checking the user's version against the latest release. If an update or new version of software is detected, PowerUpdate can automatically download and install the newer version. The next time the end user launches their application, they will be using the most up-to-date software.

Multi-Platform, Compatible With Major Installers

PowerUpdate is fully compatible with all major installation and deployment solutions, including Zero G's award-winning InstallAnywhere® deployment solution. PowerUpdate is available for all major platforms, including Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, Mac OS, Solaris, Linux, and most other Unix Java-enabled operating systems. PowerUpdate is written in Java and utilizes Zero G's proprietary LaunchAnywhere(TM) technology.

PowerUpdate is the first of several new services that the Zero G will introduce this year as the company transitions its business model towards software infrastructure services. ``The application service provider (ASP) sector represents a tremendous growth opportunity for Zero G,'' said Shapiro. ``We have established considerable expertise in two key areas of ASP infrastructure: software deployment and automated updating. We are leveraging our expertise by developing a host of new products and services to address the changing needs of the rapidly expanding ASP marketplace.''

Availability and Pricing

PowerUpdate will be available this summer directly from the Zero G web site on the Internet at http://www.ZeroG.com at no cost to developers for the basic service. Technical support is available through DevNet, Zero G's online developers resource that is also accessed through Zero G's website.
